ABOUT the ART

Original Paintings and Art

Oil and Acrylic paintings primarily on canvas but some are on glass, masonite, musical instrument cases... all originals come with a 8.5x11 Art Sample Print included with the certificate of authenticity and provenance.

Mixed Media Originals with Digital Foundation

My work begins with a pencil or pen to develop the initial ideas.  As the concept develops other image elements are added too the composition. Once the concept begins to solidify the art elements and reference images are moved into the digital space, where I further develop compositions, explore form, and refine the conceptual direction of each piece. Often times this digital stage serves as an underpainting—a foundational layer where structure, balance, and intent are established. Sometimes the digital stage becomes a feature element on an hand painted background.

From there, the work transitions into the physical world. Each composition is produced as a high-quality print on fine art substrate, becoming the starting point for an analog transformation. I build upon this surface using mixed media—paint, mark-making, texture, and material interventions—allowing the piece to evolve beyond its digital origin.

No two works are identical. Each piece is individually altered, layered, and resolved by hand, introducing variation, depth, and physical presence. The digital component provides precision and control; the physical process introduces unpredictability and human response. It is in this tension that the final work emerges.

I consider the digital layer not as the finished piece, but as the first step in a larger, tactile process. The result is a one-of-a-kind original that bridges technology and material—where concept, process, and surface converge.

To further connect the viewer with the work, each piece includes a QR code linking to its story, process, and context—extending the artwork beyond the physical object into an ongoing dialogue. These originals are assigned an original catalog number and issued a certificate of authenticity and provenance.

Art Commissions

Yes! Currently there is a waitlist for new commissioned paintings. The wait is around 1-2 months. Minimum size dimensions are 16x20 in. which starts at $2500. Custom dimensions are welcome, as canvases can be ordered at any size for specific large walls. If you would like to learn more about commissioning new art, contact the studio.  studio@laruearts.com

How does the refundable deposit for a commission painting work?

For any artwork other than portraits, a 20% deposit is needed to be added to the waitlist, however the full deposit is refundable at any time. The commission can be canceled prior to, during, or after the painting is finished either by Doug or the client. Art is very personal and subjective for both the client(s) and the artist, so in the event that a commissioned artwork is not claimed it will be released to the open market and/or the galleries.

Portrait Commissions, a 30% deposit is needed to be added to the waitlist. The commission can be canceled prior to completion, 15% of the deposit will be returned to the client. Client will have the opportunity to view the artwork before it is finished for "Approved for Completion" authorization.  After the painting is  "Approved for Completion" and finished the client may still cancel the commission, if this is the case the deposit will not be returned to the client. Art is very personal and subjective for both the client(s) and the artist, so in the event that a commissioned artwork is not claimed or canceled it will be released to the open market and/or galleries.

This system has kept everybody happy, and mainly it allows Doug to follow his method which is inherent to his creative process. For a commission, typically clients will suggest a subject, and palette preferences. Doug does not accept all subjects or color palettes but is happy to hear what you have in mind. For example, a client might say they want a 72 in x 90 in horizontal artwork depicting something reminiscent of their favorite three paintings from his catalog. Since the deposit is 100% refundable on non-portrait art, Doug has the freedom to run with the suggestion and infuse the inspiration into the original final concept.
